Alexander McGaughey. Died, at his home in Greene township, April 24th, at 10:30 a.m., after suffering from an affection of the brain for about a month. Mr. McGaughey was born March 22nd 1818, in Mercer county, Pennsylvania, and came to Mercer county, Illinois in June, 1838, where he made his home until his death. He was married in September, 1849. His wife, who is in feeble health, two sons and one daughter survive him; three daughters and one son having died in their childhood and youth. Mr. McGaughey was a man of good business ability and sterling integrity. He was for many years a member of the United Presbyterian church at Norwood. A few years since, he moved from his farm in Suez township to his property near Viola and since that time has been a member of the U. P. congregation of that place. He was a model farmer, a typical republican and a gentile and earnest Christian. The funeral was held at 2 o'clock, Wednesday, Apr. 26th from the U. P. church in Viola.

Alexander was born 22 March 1818 in Mercer Co Pa near New Bedford, Pa. In 1839 he moved to Mercer County Illinois coming west with some of his brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, and cousins. The first few years he lived with his brother William and his wife Barbary McGaughey. He bought his first property from the Government Land Office at Dixon Illinois which was eighty acres located about halfway between what is now Viola and Aledo, Illinois. He made the trip with his brothers-in-law and uncle on 25 Sept 1839 where they all made an application for property on the same day. The property he purchased was in sec 18 next to his uncle John Carnahan. This 120 acres he sold to his cousin Oscar Carnahan and he purchased 160 acres of what is now part of Viola that runs north-south through the town. His brother-in-law Elijah Stewart purchased property in sex 14 and what is now the east half of Viola.

On 19 Sept 1849 at Farlow's Grove north of Viola, Alexander was married by the Presbyterian Minister, L C Crittended. Her Youngest brother, William Moore, lived with them for a short time before he moved to Chicago, Illinois. Alexander was a grain and stock farmer and in the later part of the 1850's they moved to Suez Twp. where they continued to live.

Alexander died 24 April 1893 and his wife Eliza Ellen died 23 Sept 1894. They are buried in the Viola Cemetery at Viola, Illinois.
