Mary McBride Dies at 89
Miss Mary McBride, at 89 one of the oldest native residents of Corpus Christi, died at noon Saturday in a local hospital. "Miss Mary," as hundreds of South Texans called her, was the daughter of pioneer settlers of this area. The McBride homestead where she was born, Aug. 20, 1866, was her life-long home. Her father was Capt. James McBride, who had shipped out from his home near Dublin on a revenue cutter when he was 14. Her mother was Mary Dunn, daughter of Lawrence Dunn, who had come over from Ireland in 1846.
Local Schools
The McBride farm, then situated five miles from the village of Corpus Christi, was started before the Civil War. Miss Mary attended local schools, received her teaching certificates at normal school and, later, attended the University of Texas. She began her 38 years of teaching at the old Oso School. For several years, before the turn of the century, she taught there. Then she served on the faculty of Edward Furman, Cheston Health, and Charles Crossley Schools and headed the staff as principal of the David Hirsch School.
Active in Church
A member of the cathedral parish, she was active for many years in the Altar Society. Her name is listed as a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America and the National Council of Catholic Women. In the NCCW, she served as a member of the diocesan board of directors. With the creation of the parish of St. Theresa near her home, Miss Mary worked actively in its Altar Society. In 1952, she was recognized for her life of service to the diocese by Pope Pius XII. As an "outstanding Catholic laywoman," she received the medal, "pro Ecclesia et Pontifice."
Ill For Weeks
Miss Mary had been ill for some weeks preceding her death. Rosary will be said at 8 o'clock tonight in the McBride home, 5545 Dolan off McBride Road. Funeral Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday in St. Theresa's Church. Pallbearers will be eight of her nephews. They are Joseph Whelan and James Whelan of Kerrville, Tom Whelan and Edward Whelan of Corpus Christi, Gerald McBride and Dennis McBride of Realitos, James McBride of Encino and C. J. McBride of Laredo. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Julia Robinson, and a brother, Peter McBride of Realitos, and by nieces and nephews in the McBride, Whelan, Robinson, Uehiger(?) and Vafzlavick(?) families.
