Mr. Briggle graduated from Springfield High School in 1927, Illinois College in 1931, Northwestern University with a law degree and attended Harvard University. He practiced law from 1933-34 with Brown, Hay and Stephens and at other times with James Magill, Stanley Thomas and J. Waldo Ackerman Jr. He served as an instructor at the Lincoln Law College in Springfield.
He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy for three and a half years during World War II. He served as president of the Westminster Presbyterian Church Men's Brotherhood, Inner Guard of the Springfield Elks Lodge from 1939-40, Committee for National Christian Mission, special attorney for the state Department of Insurance in 1942, Republican precinct committeeman, parliamentarian for the Speaker of the House, state senatorial committeeman, president of the Downtown Kiwanis Club, elder and deacon for Westminster Presbyterian Church, secretary for the Illinois Bar Association and president of YMCA. He was a member of Sangamo Club, Illini Country Club, Masonic Lodge 71 AF&AM and Phi Kappa Sigma.
Survivors: wife, Susan; a daughter, Mary Judith (husband, Pete) Boynton of Galesburg; three sons, Robert Deal (wife, Mary Rae) Briggle of Colorado Springs, Colo., Michael Edward (wife, Kim) Strum of Spring, Texas, and James Theodore (wife, Lynne) Strum of Worthington, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services: Boardman-Smith Funeral Home, the Dr. John Hembruch officiating. Interment: Oak Ridge Cemetery.
