His childhood days were passed upon a farm in Plainfield N.H. Attending School two terms per year until he was sixteen years of age.Afterwards he attended the
New London Academy and from there went to Dartmouth College(report cards are in archives) from which he graduated in 1860.He commenced teaching at once and was principal of the academies of at Chester and Bradford VT.And at new Ipswich,N.H. He was also superintendent of the schools in Montpelier,VT and Lebanon, N.H. He fitted students for
Amherst,Williams,Dartmouth,and Harvard colleges.
In 1854 he joined the Baptize church and remained active and efficient in the church work in all places in which he since lived. Preferring a more independent life he relocated to Manhattan,KS in 1883.From then he lived on a farm on College Hill until the present time of his death 1916.A leading spirit,Master of the Kansas State Grange 1900-1906 and served in the House of Representative for Riley,KS.For seventeen years Mr. Westgate has been recognized as one of our best citizens,genial and affable to all.
