Charles Aldred Passes Away;
Final Rites Held On Wednesday

Death early Monday at the Veteran's hospital at Sioux Falls. S. Dak., brought to a close the months of suffering of Charles Aldred, businessman here for more than a quarter of a cen tury. He had been hospitalized for the past five months.

Mr. Aldred, 63, was born in O'Brien county and spent 57 years of his life in the Sutherland community. His death termlnated his business career in which he had engaged as a hardware dealer since 1924. He was interested in the public welfare of the community and had served as a town councilman, and was a member and had served as an officer of the Commercial Club.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Methodist church with Rev. W.L. Rowse in charge, directed by the Baumgarten Funeral Home.

The Legion Auxiliary quintet composed of Mesdames Henry Kaiser, W.L. Rowse, Lester Raper, Lyle Youde and Ray Olson, accompanied by Mrs. Otis Hulser, sang, "Nearer my God to Thee" and "Beyond the Sunset." C.W. Johannsen, E.J. Lage, Robert Scothorn, H.J. Reginitter, H.W. Johann and C.A. Jenner were honorary pallbearers. Casket pallbeareres were Roy Schimmer, Lars Jensen, E.D. Triplett, George Horstmann, W.E. Hockert and Charles Williams.

Dr. and Mrs. L.L. Jones, Mr. and Mrs. Marion Crosser and Mr. and Mrs. E.D. Baird had charge of the flowers.

Military Services

Military services were con ducted by the Sutherland American Legion Post No. 152. Myr.' Farquhar and Roger Youde were color bearers and John Engelke and John Powell served as color guard. Delbert Johannsen was in charge of the firing squad and taps were sounded by Clayton Hill, bugler. Donald Waggoner, Legion Post Chaplain, presented the flag to the family.

The deceased was a member of the armed forces in World War I. He served as a private in the Medical Corps at the Base Hospital, Camp Gordon, Atlanta, Georgia. He enlisted on July 24, 1918, and was discharged February 11, 1919.

Interment was in Waterman Cemetery.

1887-Charles Aldred-1950

Charles Aldred, the son of Erastus and Margaret Aldred was born on April 24, 1887, at Paullina, Iowa, and succumbed after a seven month illness, on April 30, 1950, at the Royal S. Johnson Memorial, US Veterans' Hospital at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He had just passed his 63rd brithday seven days before his death.

On October 24, 1917, he was united in marriage to Mellie L. Wald of Sutherland. They established their home here and have been residents of this community since.

"Charlie," as he was familiarly known to his many friends, had been in the hardware business since 1924 and prior to that time, was employed by his uncle, J.O. Hakeman, in the same location. He was for years active in community affairs, having served 4 terms on the town council, was chairman of the Commercial Club, served as Commander and Finance Officer in the American Legion. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias lodge. He was chairman of the Labor Day Celebration for 10 consecutive years, many times willingly giving of his time and effort for public duties, rather than personal ones.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mellie, his only daughter, Arline, one sister, Mrs. Laura Briggs of Long Beach, Calif., 3 brothers, Frank of Milford, Milton of Sioux City, and George of Primghar, and many other relatives and a host of friends.
