E.Thomas told his family that Confederate Renegades had killed his family in SC, while he hid. He made his way to Knoxville to join the Union Army at age 16.
His description of his family's murders resembled the killings of the Swanger sons & their Dad in the book & movie, Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier. (written decades after E. Thomas had told his 2nd family about them.) The book is based on true stories of events in that area during the Civil War.
