Ernest is the son of Clarence Edwin McClary, son of John Hannibal McClary and Emma Catherine Stinchcomb, and his first wife Dica Ellen Pike, daughter of William Thomas Pike and Rhoda Northern.
About 1916, Ernest Edwin McClary married Shella Carrie McVay, daughter of Henry Albin McVay and Nancy Jane Hunter. Over the next several years, Shella gave birth to three children in South Dakota before the family finally settled in Oregon about 1933.
In March of 2014, the couple's only living child, Beatrice, passed away at the age of 96.
Ernest & Shella are survived by 7 grandchildren.
