A 6'7" forward from St. John's University, Dove was selected by the Detroit Pistons with the fourth pick of the 1967 NBA Draft. He played two years with the Pistons before joining the New York Nets of the ABA, with whom he remained until 1972. In his NBA/ABA career, Dove averaged 11.1 points per game and 6.0 rebounds per game.
Dove died when the taxi he was driving skidded into the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn in 1983.

Per SAC: Dove was born at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, Massachusetts. I wrote an article on his ancestry "Notable Mayflower Descendants: Sonny Dove," in the Mayflower Descendant, Volume 68 (2020), pp. 98-104, in which I reference his birth certificate which I looked at in Massachusetts Vital Records, 1945, Births, 6:94. Also his father was not Naragansett Native American, but was an African-American born in New Bern, North Carolina (I also looked at his parents marriage certificate in Falmouth, Massachusetts in 1945).
