The sad and somewhat unexpected intelligence of Mrs. Winchester's death at San Francisco on Tuesday was received here in the afternoon of that day. It is seldom that a community is touched more deeply than was ours at the receipt of this news. Death is always a melancholy theme for contemplation; but it becomes especially so when youth and loveliness of character are the attributes of the deceased. To those who knew Mrs. Winchester, it is superfluous to speak of the mildness of her temper, the amiability of her manner, the true womanly grace and beauty that shoneout every resplendently in her intercourse with others. A dutiful child, an obliging sister , a faithful wife, a fond mother, a kind friend. A sympathizing community will join the bereaved family in dropping a tear upon the grave that is to receive the mortal remains of one of those gems "of purest ray serene," of which earth has no superabundance. DIED WINCHESTER - In San Francisco, Cal. May 7, 1878, Mary P. wife of G.C. Winchester aged 28 years and 6 months.
Mrs. Winchester was born at Fryeburg, Oxford county, Maine, in the 31st of October 1849, her parents being Abraham and Lydia P. Andrews the latter of whom has resided in this village for some years with her son, Dr. A. D. Andrews. Having spent several years here in the West, with her relatives, she returned to Maine, but not to stay, as Mr. Clinton Winchester soon brought her back to this village as his bride; they having been married in Portland, April 6, 1874.
Always delicate in health, that fatal disease, consumption, fastened itself firmly upon her some two years ago; and although every possible effort was made to improve her condition, neither the climate of Florida nor that of California proved of avail; and internal hemorrhage being super-added, she breathed her last on Tuesday, her sister Calista being with her in her dying hour.
The remains are on the way to this village for interment.
