ROBERT ADOLPH WIDELL: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
Palm Beach Post, The (FL) - July 22, 2011
Deceased Name: ROBERT ADOLPH WIDELL
11.12.1925 - 06.25.2011 A life-long resident of West Palm Beach, FL, Robert Adolph Widell was born at Good Samaritan Hospital to his late parents Gustaf A. Widell, and the former Francis Opal Ford. He graduated Palm Beach High in 1943, and enlisted in the Army Air Corps. As a member of the 91st Bomb Group, he flew 35 missions from AF station 121, in Bassingbourn, England, as a waist gunner aboard the B-17 flying fortress "Star Dust". Some of Bobby Widell's ventures included working on a Montana sheep ranch on the Tenderfoot Creek in the summer of 1942, working in California's wine country while studying at and playing football in the Rose Bowl Stadium for Bakersfield Junior College, and for a season working in Alaska. Upon returning to West Palm Beach, Bob Widell, the always-enthusiastic -sportsman, played football for the West Palm Beach Jets, a semi-professional football team, studied at Palm Beach College, and met his first wife, the former Sibyl L. Geer. They married on January 10, 1953, and in 1956, built the third home constructed in Lake Clarke Shores. They had three children, Gary A., Gregory S., and Nancy A., and were married 22 years until Sibyl's passing on March 11, 1975. Bob worked most of his life as a sheet metal worker, and taught the sheet metal trade as a vocational teacher. Eventually, he returned to private business as a partner, and later served as president, of West Gate Sheet Metal, until his retirement in 1990. In the late 1980s, he married the former Bonnie-Sue Brown, and with this marriage added her son, Jason Stegall to his family. Mr. Widell was a member and former First Reader of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Harmonia Masonic Lodge #138, and served twice as Worthy Patron of Iretta Sherman Chapter #145, OES - all in West Palm Beach. In addition to Sibyl, Bob was predeceased by his twin sister, Elsie Opal Smith; grandson, Nicholas Megrath, and granddaughter, Kira Widell. His survivors include Bonnie-Sue, Gary (Susie) of Tampa, Gregory (Diana) of Toronto, Nancy, and Jason of West Palm Beach; grandchildren, David (Kristen), Chris, Andrew, Heather, Hannah, and Holly of Tampa, Ian, Alina, Lianna, and Annika of Toronto, Robert and Lauren of West Palm Beach; great-grandson, Ryan of West Palm Beach, three nephews, many cousins, and his master's best friend -- the little cairn terrier that Bob named "Widdle". Asked how Bob wanted to be remembered by his family and friends, he said, "Perfect". No services were held at his request; however, donations can be made to the Nicholas Megrath Scholarship Fund, at the Community Foundation of Palm Beach, 700 South Dixie Hwy., Suite 200, West Palm Beach, FL 33401, in loving memory of Robert Adolph Widell.
