Lloyd was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on December 4, 1911. His parents were John and Louise Newman Mathews. They were living in a house on Washington Street NE at the time. He was the fifth of ten children. Lloyd attended South High and joined the US Army at the beginning of WWII. He served during the entire war and settled in Los Angeles, California after the war. Lloyd never married. He died in Los Angeles on July 17, 1967. He is buried in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
