AGED SONOMA CITIZEN PASSES TO THE BEYOND

Horatio Appleton, husband of Mrs. Hannah A. Appleton and father of William G. and Horace S. Appleton, Mrs. Elsie A Gottenberg and Mrs. Carrie A. Burlingame, died at the family residence in Sonoma on Sunday.

The funeral services were held Tuesday, Mrs. Burlingame is president of the County Council of Woman's Clubs and is prominent socially. The family has long resided in the "Mission City" and has assisted in making much history of the "Valley of the Moon."

Mr. Appleton came to California in July, 1849, and came to Sonoma county in 1865, locating in the beautiful valley where he spent his declining years. He was attracted to this section by his love of viticulture, planting one of the pioneer vineyards, but as phylloxera killed the grapes, he was obliged to replace them with trees and had a fine orchard for many years until old age compelled his retirement to the city, where he died at the advanced age of 88 years.
