Esther M. Harshbarger, 100, of Mt. Pleasant and formerly of Salem, passed away on Sunday, March 19, 2017, at Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mt. Pleasant.

Esther was born on December 1, 1916, at Stillwell, Illinois the daughter of Walter T. “Tom” and Ethel Caroline (Wiedmeyer) Ensminger. She married John F. Harshbarger on August 20, 1934, in Carthage, Illinois, and he preceded her in death in 1975.

Esther was a homemaker until her husband’s health failed and at that time she began to work outside the home to help support her family. She worked at Sears Department Store in Mt. Pleasant and later became the clerk at the Salem Post Office until she retired. Esther was the rock of her family.

She is survived by her children; Karmen Berlin of Circleville, Ohio, John Harshbarger of Mt. Pleasant and Jim Harshbarger of Salem, 6 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren along with 3 great great grandchildren.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents, husband and three sisters: one sister in infancy, Almeta Simkin and Thelma Foss and two brothers: Otto and Otis Ensminger.

According to her wishes cremation was accorded and no services were held. She was laid to rest next to her husband in the Salem South Cemetery.
