Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Kankakee. Memorials may be made to the Kankakee YMCA. He died Sunday (July 10, 2011) at Riverside Medical Center.
Mr. Africano owned and operated Africano's Barber Shop with his nephew, Nick Africano, on Court Street in Kankakee for 60 years. He was born Feb. 3, 1912, in Harvard, the son of Nicola and Teresa Rasumi Africano. His wife, the former Dorothy Hedlin, whom he married in 1934 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Kankakee, died June 20, 1992. He was a charter member of the Sons of Italy and a member of the Kankakee YMCA. He was an usher at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society. He attended his 80th consecutive Africano family reunion June 26, 2011. He loved life, God, being with his family, bowling and playing cards. He was a big Chicago Cubs fan.
Surviving are one daughter and two sons-in-law, Judith and Michael Quigley, of St. Anne, and Jay (Irene) Kerouac, of Momence; 10 grandchildren, Leon Kerouac, Michael Kerouac, Bryan (Renee) Kerouac, Matthew (Tammy) Kerouac, Renee Kerouac, Michelle (Adam) Stone, Scott (Tanya) Quigley, Gina Thompson, Nicole (Christian) Blank and Jessica (Hank) Kijewski; 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Theresa Kerouac; five brothers, Henry, Charles, Samuel, Anthony and Joseph; one sister, Mamie Wieliczko; and special friend, Dora Armenise.
