Kate was the third child and third daughter of five children of Joseph Schmidt and Anna Helen Jansen. She was born in Green Creek and the family spent some years in Florida where it was hoped the weather would help her mother's tuberculosis.
Kate married Henry Hoene in a double wedding with her sister Celia Schmidt and Ben Wesselman.
