Enlisted in the U.S. Army on April 1, 1847 from Wilks County, North Carolina. Mustered into Company A, 3rd U.S. Dragoons as a Private. Mustered out of active service on July 31, 1848.

Confederate Civil War Service:
Enlisted as a Private in Company B of the 15th Georgia Infantry Regiment on March 4, 1862 at Carnesville, Franklin County, Georgia. Private John Teague, the 15th Georgia and the Army of Northern Virginia were surrendered by General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House, Virginia on April 9, 1865.
