S. Jay Brooks died of Peritonitis at his home in Pleasant Gap., Mo., Dec. 8, 1893, after an illness of only a few days, his body arriving here (Coldwater) for burial Monday evening, accompanied by Mrs. Brooks and I.N. Mains, the funeral being attended the following day from the home of John Roberts, East Chicago Street, Rev. Wm. Denman officiating. Born Nov. 30, 1845 in Coldwater Township, he lived there as a boy and man until 1883, when he moved to Mo. He also took a deep interest in day and Sunday schools, and leaves behind him an excellent record as a devoted husband, father and neighbor, and a Christian gentleman. Jan. 22, 1875 he was married to Miss Evelyn Sweezy in Marion, New York, who survives him together with two children, Jesse and Fanny. He was a brother of Mrs. John Roberts and Miss Hattie Brooks of this city, and Ira W. Brooks of Pleasant Gap, Missouri."
