Alfred was born and raised in Butte, Montana. After graduating from Butte High School in 1949, he entered the Naval Reserve in Butte. That began a 20 year career in the US Navy serving at first as a radioman and then as an Electronics Instructor. He rose to the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer and after retiring from the Navy in 1971 he worked for several years in the Electronics Industry during which time he also went back to school, earning a degree in Art history.
Alfred's father, also Alfred E. Elge and his mother, Evelyn (Ethel) Buback Elge are buried in this same cemetery in Butte, Montana. Alfred had a half-sister, Barbara Claire Elge Whittemore who passed away in 1986.
