Dennis C. "Denny" Whitsel, 60, Hollidaysburg, went home to be with the Lord Sunday at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus.

He was born in Mapleton Depot, son of Denver and Alma (Grissinger) Whitsel. He married Sue Park on April 4, 1970, in Mapleton Depot.

Surviving are his wife of 41 years; his parents; two sons: Mark A. and wife, Kelly, and Troy D. and fiancee, Erin, all of Pittsburgh; two grandsons: Silas and Oliver Whitsel; and a brother, Monte and wife, Patricia, a sister, Marta Kay Yohn and husband, Eric, and a sister-in-law, Joanne Whitsel, all of Mapleton Depot.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Nelson.

Denny was a 1968 graduate of Southern Huntingdon High School and continued his education with computer training in Silver Spring, Md. He served in the National Guard for six years. He was an IT manager for New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co. for 12 years, and prior to that he worked for Keystone Financial for more than 20 years.

Denny was a member of Providence Presbyterian Church, Altoona, where for many years he served as a church elder, Sunday school superintendent and teacher. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing the banjo and riding his motorcycle.

All who were blessed to know him will miss Denny's gracious spirit and generous attitude.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home Inc., 2309 Broad Ave., Altoona, and 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Thursday, June 30, 2011, at Providence Presbyterian Church, 2401 Broad Ave., Altoona. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church officiated by the Revs. Jean Martin and Mark Whitsel. Interment will be at Cornelius Chapel Cemetery, Mapleton Depot.

In remembrance of Denny, those who wish may make contributions to Providence Presbyterian Church, 2401 Broad Ave., Altoona, PA 16601.
