Avery Gwin was a medical doctor. He was married to Elizabeth Presley Thornton, a daughter of Presley and Alice Thornton, and a niece of Charles Thornton and Sarah Fitzhugh. Charles, Sarah, and Elizabeth are also believed to be buried in the "Adams Cemetery" on Liberty Lane. Avery's middle initial was "O" for Owen, his mother's maiden name. The Owens side of his family was well known for Avery's grandfather, Brackett Owen, who built the first block fort at Louisville, in 1783.
