Verba Burton Smith was the daughter of Joseph Jasper (Jody) Burton and Bessie Ione Fletcher. She was the last living grandchild of Levi Burton and Amanda Smith Burton Allen Housely, and one of the last grandchildren of Wilton Fletcher and Rachel Grogan Fletcher, of Wright County, Missouri.
Verba's parents and five siblings moved to Fresno in 1926, and joined her father's three siblings and their families who had arrived several years earler. From the second she stepped off the train, Verba was a dedicated Fresnan. Weather was never too hot -- Verba considered 100 degree days "resort weather."
