A child was born on February 1, 1907, to the union of Albert, Sr., and Willie Griffin in Belzoni, Mississippi. It was a girl they named Jessie Mae. She eventually had five brothers, Ernest, Albert, Jr., Chester, Paul, and Clarence.

As a child in 1919, she accepted Christ and became a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church in Devolente, Mississippi under the leadership of Rev. J. L. Randall.

Jessie Mae began her education at Devolente Elementary school. She attended Alcorn High School, Lorman, Mississippi. After completing High School she took the Teachers Examination in 1927 and received her teacher's license to teach elementary education. She taught elementary education in many of the schools in the surrounding area.

While teaching school and attending church she met and made many friends. One of those friends introduced her to Robert Gammage with whom she kept company for three years before they were married in February 1932 in Belzoni, Mississippi.

Mr. and Mrs. Gammage moved to South Bend in 1946. Shortly after her arrival, she joined a church in the Prairie Avenue Community Center under the leadership of Rev. Louis Johnson. Mother Gammage has been a member of the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church for over 50 years. During this time she has worked with the Sunday School, served on the Deaconess and Mothers' Boards, taught the Missionary Society, and served as an adviser for the Young Matrons. She was treasurer of the Building Fund for many years and was the first woman to serve as a Trustee of the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church.

During the day she took care of several of the neighborhood children. Two of these were Kathy and Stephanie Earles. These little girls were the first to call Mrs. Gammage "mama." Thus became the name everyone so affectionately called her, "Mama Gammage".

Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. "
Proverbs 31: 10-12

There are many nephews, nieces, other relatives, and friends who will miss her dearly and we can truly say that she has been a good and faithful servant of the Lord. On Sunday morning, December 27 a voice from heaven called saying, Jessie Mae, come unto me and I will give you rest.
