Samuel D. Smith purchased a parcel of land on Oolonoy Creek, Pickens Co., SC from Edley H. Jones on March 28, 1846 for $240.00. The family moved to Collin Co., Texas where Samuel D. Smith purchased 71 acres of land on December 10, 1855.

Samuel D. Smith and family "came in a caravan with the Hendricks family from South Carolina. Samuel D. and Clarinda are buried in Hendricks Cemetery about a mile and a half northeast of Valdasta. Samuel D. was an extensive land holder in the Valdasta community and an active deacon in the Valdasta Baptist Church. He was on the first Board of Trustees of Buckner Orphans Home, and was one of the three trustees who came to Dallas with Father Buckner in September, 1880 and purchased the land east of Dallas where the present Buckner Childrens Home is located."e (Source: Mrs. J.C. Samuel was Captain of the muster in SC for several years before the family migrated to TX, stopping briefly in AR and arriving in Collin Co in 1855. The family traveled by covered wagon. There were at least 5, perhaps 6, children. Samuel headrighted a large area of land in the Valdasta region of Collin Co. Other children were born in Collin co, making a total of 12.
Samuel was one of the founders of Stoney Point Baptist Church.
