Spaht was a Colonel in the U.S. Army in World War II, and he served as a judge in the 19th Judicial District from 1946 to 1951. He was an unsuccessful candidate for Governor of Louisiana in 1952, and later was instrumental in developing Louisiana's Code of Ethics, which governs all public employees in the state. He later became a member of the Louisiana Board of Ethics.
