Rachel Ward Thornburg was the fifth of ten children born to Ephraim Thornburg and his wife Rachael Simmons. She was born in Tridelphia, Ohio Co, (West) Virginia. On February 23, 1841 she married Dr. Patrick Henry McCullough in Tridelphia. The couple had eight children: Isadora H. (B. 1842), Julius Wellington (b. 1843), David Benson (b. 1846), William Martin (b. 1850), Emma Florence (b. 1853), Robert Clifford (b. 1854), Frank Fenton (b. 1856), and Georgia Lee (b. 1861). After Rachel's death, her widowed husband married Fannie M. Williams (1833-1910).
