Mary E. Smith, 75, died November 20, 1930 at her farm home north of Wheaton. Mary Ellen was born April 25, 1855 in Philadelphia, PA, the eldest child of James A. and Bridget (Holland) Keating. The Keating family moved to East St. Louis, IL where Mary married John R. Smith on July 21, 1872 at St. Patrick's Church by Rev. F. H. Zabel. John and Mary, together with Mary's parents, moved to Irish Creek, KS in 1877 to homestead at the encouragement of Rev. Thomas A. Butler. John and Mary, and her parents had adjoining properties. Mary gave birth to 11 children, 8 of whom lived to adulthood. It is remembered that even during childbirth, Mary never missed putting out the noonday meal. While her husband took work in St. Louis to earn much needed cash, Mary stayed home and tended the farm, livestock, and children. Mary was widowed in 1900 while she still had several small children. Preceding her in death were her husband and parents, and 3 children, Ellen, Johnnie, and Delia. Surviving are her 8 adult children, Joe (Lilly), Mrs. Rose (Sam) Bennett, Andy (Minnie) of Clyde, Mrs. May (William) Pierce, Jim (Margaret), Frank (Alice), Harry of the home, and Mrs. Josie (Emmett) Carlin; a large number of grandchildren; and her siblings Henry (Mary), Michael, Tom (Lora), Jim (Nell), and Anna (Frank) Wendling. A funeral Mass was held at St. Michael's Church in Wheaton, with burial in the Smith family plot at St. Joseph's cemetery in Lillis. A large number of friends and relatives attended Mrs. Smith's funeral.
