Obituary, The Morning Sun, Pittsburg, Kansas, Thursday, May 20, 1976:

A U. S. Army Private First Class, son of the fire captain of Pittsburg Fire Department Station No. 3, was killed Tuesday when he fell from a hang glider he was piloting in Hawaii.

PFC Jerry Lee Cox, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald L. Cox of 513 Norris Drive, died after he fell from the vehicle while piloting it through a series of turns.

He was born September 18, 1955, in Pittsburg.

He attended Pittsburg Public Schools and lived here until entering the Army in 1972. He took his basic military training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and had been stationed in Hawaii the past 3 1/2 years.

While living in Pittsburg, PFC Cox was active in scuba diving and had taken lessons in parachuting at Kansas State College of Pittsburg.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include the parents, of the home; one brother, Rodney Cox, of the home; the paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Cox, 218 N. Highland; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Vera McInosh, Dallas, and the paternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Grable, Route 4.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Bath Funeral Home in Pittsburg.
