He was the son of Pastor and Mrs. A. L. Benz, who served in the First Lutheran church in Warren from 1864 to 1872. In 1872 the family moved to Erie. He was ordained in the Lutheran ministry in 1896 and served parishes in Zelienople, McKeesport and Erie, also Ashtabula, Ohio. The Benz family has been noted in the history of the Lutheran church in Pennsylvania. A brother of the deceased, the Rev. G. A. Benz, served for 50 years as pastor of St. John’s Lutheran church, Erie. Another brother, the Rev. Theodore Benze, was professor of Old Testament for many years at the Philadelphia Seminary. The family took a very active part in the Lutheran churches In Erie for three-quarters of a century. A nephew of the deceased is now serving as a missionary in India.
