Mrs Grace Myrtle Bechtel, 66, wife of Harvey S Bechtel, president of the Exchange State Bank, quietly fell asleep Saturday evening at 7:20 in the Elkhart General hospital, where she had been taken last Wednesday after having suffered a relapse from diabetes and complications. She had been a diabetic for a number of years and her condition became serious September 17.

Mrs Bechtel, daughter of Benjamin F and Mary (Eberhart) Melvin, was born February 18, 1882, in Wakarusa and her entire life was spent in this community.

On July 16, 1903, she was married to Mr Bechtel and two children were born, a son and a daughter. The daughter died in infancy.

During girlhood, Mrs Bechtel became a member of the First Christian church and was active in church and Sunday school work until failing health prevented her active participation.

Surviving with Mr Bechtel is the son, Robert O Bechtel, his wife, Evelyn and their two daughters, Margaret Ruth and Jane Ellen, and a sister, Mrs W O Yarian of Toledo, O. Mrs Yarian and a sister-in-law, Mrs Frank Melvin, of White Cloud, Mich, have been at the Bechtel home the past two weeks.

Friends were received at the Bechtel home from noon Monday until Tuesday noon, when the body was taken to the First Christian church, to lie in state until the funeral service there at 2 o'clock. Rev Hugh T Hall officiated at the burial which was in Olive cemetery, five miles north of Wakarusa. Wakarusa business places were closed during the funeral hour.

The pallbearers were: Richard Bleiler, Franklin Bleiler, Benny Melvin, Robert Melvin, and William Melvin of Elkhart, grandsons of Mrs Nellie Melvin and grand nephews of Mrs Bechtel, and J Earl Roose of Goshen, a nephew of Mr H S Bechtel.

Five former Honey Dozen club members attended the service in a body. Mrs Bessie (Fidler) Kohler, Niles, Mich, Mrs Maude (Holdeman) Hardesty, Bristol, Mrs Lola (Mishler) Morris, South Bend; Mrs Olive (Smeltzer) Eshleman and Miss Mable Stewart of Elkhart.

Others who attended from out of town: Mr Ira Esheman, Elkhart, Mr Bert Morris and Mrs Mable Fries, South Bend, Mr & Mrs Estus Leversee, Gobles, Mich, Mrs Frank Wehrly, Nappanee, Mr & Mrs Charles Peoples, New Paris, Mrs Davis Norris, Shipshewana, and Mrs Ethel (Arnold) Wilson, Grensburg, Pa.

Relatives attending from out of town: Mr & Mrs Harold Yarian (nephew), Toledo, Ohio; Mrs J E Houston, (niece of Mr Bechtel) Livingston, NJ; Mr & Mrs W O Yarian (sister) Toledo, Ohio; Mrs Nellie Melvin (sister-in-law) White Cloud, Mich; Mr & Mrs Ben Melvin (nephew) Elkhart; Mr and Mrs Homer N Roose (sister of Mr Bechtel), Goshen; and Mr & Mrs Earl Slabaugh and Mr & Mrs Woodie Slabaugh, all of Nappanee; Mr & Mrs Floyd Slabaugh, Elkhart; and Mr & Mrs Dan Bechtel of Goshen.

The beautiful tributes of flowers bespoke the high esteem in which Mrs Bechtel was held in the community and her going is a distinct loss to all who have been privileged to know her.
