Father, Asahel Sherman, a carpenter and builder; son of Asahel and Rowena (Ballou) Sherman, of Burnllville, R. I.

Mother, Eunice (Walker) Sherman; daughter of Willis and Ruth (Buffum) Walker, of Douglass. Yale relatives include two first cousins, Willis E. Walker, '71, and Rev. Floyd E. Sherman, '78 D.
East Greenwich Seminary and Philhps-Andover. High oration appointment Junior and Senior years; member Delta Kappa, Alpha Delta Phi, and Phi Beta Kappa. Taught at Hall's Private School in Ellington, Conn., 1871-72; instructor in Latin, Greek, and English at Hopkins Grammar School 1872-1882; studied in Yale Graduate School 1872-75 (Ph.D. 1875); member of the faculty of University of Nebraska from 1882 until retirement in 1929 (chairman of English Department, professor of the English language and literature 1882-1901, dean of College of Arts and Sciences 1887-1901, and dean of Graduate School 1901— 1929, when made dean emeritus); LL.D. Nebraska Wesleyan Uni- versity 1910; gave a Chautauqua lecture course in 1895 and a course of lectures on elements and inductive study of literature at Univer- sity of Chicago in 1898; author: Analytics of Literature (1893) What is Shakespeare?(1902), Elements of Literature and Composition (1908), and How to Describe and Narrate Visually (1925); editor of Shakespeare's Macbeth (1889) and Hamlet (1903), Tennyson's The Princess (1900), and Massinger (in Masterpieces of the English Drama series) (1912); in 1877 translated into metrical form Frithiofs Saga, a Swedish epic; member Lincoln Chamber of Commerce 1913-1928, Dante League of America, Modern Language Association, and St,

Married (1) July 6,1875, in New Haven, Antoinette, daughter of Charles Barnes and Antoinette (Wilcoxson) Whittlesey, and sister of Charles W. Whittlesey, '79 S. One son, Lucius Whittlesey, at- tended University of Nebraska 1888-1891. Mrs. Sherman died August 14, 1876.

Married (2) September 2, 1878, in Athens, Pa., Anna Barber, daughter of Horace and Catherine (Barber) WiJliston.
Children: Horace Wilhston, University of Nebraska 1897-1901; and Winifred Speranza (B.A. Vassar 1907), the wife of Robert B. Updike, University of Nebraska ex-*p6. Mrs. Sherman died August 12, 1900.

Married (3) June 26, 1902, in Boston, Josephine Shaw Fisher (special student at University of Nebraska 1896-99), daughter of William and Caroline Frances (Fisher) Shaw.

Death due to myocarditis. Buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Omaha, Nebr. Survived by wife, two sons, daughter, and six grandchildren.
