A DEDICATED SERVICE

A total span of almost 40 years of dedicated service to God and to The Salvation Army bridges the beginning of the Career of Mrs. Brigadier Wilmer Powell, until her retirement from active service June 2, 1972. Her life of devotion included a great measure of love, patience, kindness and a willingness to service the many coming under her influence and direction. 29 years of their service was given in the Western Division.

Violet Elizabeth Grantham was born September 10, 1909 in Davenport, Iowa to Salvation Army Officer parents, Ensign and Mrs. W. Grantham. She was enrolled as a Junior Soldier of The Salvation Army at the age of 8 years at Omaha, Nebraska, under Captain Jimmy Cheyne.

She entered the School for Officers Training in Chicago, Illinois from Kansas City, Missouri and was commissioned as a Probationary Lieutenant on June 25, 1929. Her first appointment was Assistant at the Milwaukee Salvation Army Settlement, leaving there and going to the Chicago Westside Settlement. She then went into Corps Work, in charge at Monmouth, Illinois and Lincoln, Illinois. She was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on October 8, 1929, and to the rank of Captain on April 7, 1930.

On September 24, 1930 Captain Violet Elizabeth Grantham and Captain Wilmer Louis Powell were united in marriage at St. Louis, Missouri. To this union were born four sons – Walter, David, Herbert and Delbert (twins). The family also includes an adopted daughter, Nancylou Violet of Morris, Illinois.

Following their marriage, Captain and Mrs. Powell commanded St. Louis #5 Missouri, Cape Girardeau, Missouri; Centralia, Illinois; and then Assistant at Springfield, Missouri. Then came the commands of Harrisburg, Illinois, Frankfort, Indiana; Independence, Missouri; Council Bluffs, Iowa; Grand Island, Nebraska; Omaha South, Nebraska. Next came a return appointment to Council Bluffs, followed by the command of Hastings, Nebraska; Bismarck, North Dakota; Fremont, Nebraska; and then a return appointment to Council Bluffs, Iowa for the third time. The Powells were promoted to the rank of Adjutant on September 21, 1939, to Major on April 27, 1953 and then to the rank of Brigadier on July 16, 1964.

Brigadier Wilmer Powell was very suddenly promoted to Glory on November 27, 1971 from Council Bluffs, Iowa.

After the passing of the Brigadier, Mrs. Brigadier Powell has continued as the Commanding Officer of Council Bluffs, Iowa and will retire officially on June 2, 1972.

Brigadier and Mrs. Powell have served with distinction in each of their appointments. We do pray that God will give to her health and strength in her years of retirement and an abundance of His love and grace.

Mrs. Brigadier Powell will be staying on in Council Bluffs until the 25th of June changes, when the new Officers will be coming in at that time.
