After the death of his first wife in 1892 he married Faithey Ann Allen (1853 – 1931) and they had one son William Alfred Knight (1893 – 1951). Census records show him listed as a peddler, school teacher and minister through the years. A great-grandson, Richard Knight, in 2011 tells the story passed down to him of James Jefferson Knight by Morris Knight. "Uncle Jimmy would travel by covered wagon throughout Oklahoma to visit the homes of his children during harvest season. He would set up his wagon near their home with it's wood-burning stove inside and during the day help them harvest their crop and when finished he would move to the next child's home to help with their crop." James Jefferson Knight was a member of the Masonic Lodge and they officiated at his burial.
