Funeral services for Hershel 'Air Mail' Ashley, 75, were held at 2 p.m. Sept. 4, 2007, at Harvey-Douglas Chapel with Ben Bailey officiating. Interment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
He was born Aug. 14, 1932, in Berwyn, to Jake and Sarah Frances Smith Ashley and died on Friday, Aug. 31, 2007, in a local nursing facility. He was married to Mary Ann Blount March 2, 1956, in Gainesville, Texas. He was a resident of the Ardmore area most of his life after spending early childhood years in Canyon and Orangefield, Texas. Hershel worked for Coca Cola for 20 years transporting product and was known as "The Coke Man." He retired in May 2004 as a contract mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service. He was a member of the CB club Channel Busters, a Boy Scout leader and an ordained elder of the Christian church.
Survivors are his wife, Mary Ann, of the home; a son, Lloyd Alvin Ashley and his wife, Terri; daughters, Frances Rose Lake and husband, Wayne, Sheila Renae Love and Vickie Sue Willingham and husband, Jeff; sisters, Laverne Granger and Ruth Elliott; nine grandchildren, Brad, Ben and Jessica Love, Cody Lake, Jennifer Kinsworthy, James Ashley, Allison Potter and Jason and Braden Willingham; four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, James Ashley, and sister, Mary Ford.
His sons and grandsons served as pallbearers . Honorary escorts will be Wayne Lake, Arhcie Carroll, Jeff Willingham, Ted Gill, Teddy Love and and all of his friends.
The family requested memorials be made to Cross Timbers Hospice in lieu of other remembrances.
