Valeda Edith Downing was the daughter of Charles Perry Downing and Alma Worth Downing. She was born in Rosalia Kansas on September 26, 1890. Her childhood was spent in Stafford Kansas. Valeda joined the Baptist Church at the young age of nine. She graduated from Stafford High School in 1907 and worked at the Farmers State Bank for a number of years. She went to Kansas State College and graduated in 1915 with a BS Degree. She was an active member and secretary of the WMCA. She went to Long Beach California for one year , where she worked and was in charge of the Y.W.C.A. Tea Room. In 1917 she married Dr. J.G. Tretbar and lived the balance of her life in Stafford, Kansas. She and her husband united with the Methodist Church in 1923 when Reverend Guy Spear was pastor of the church. She was very active in church activities and taught a church school for fifteen years. She was active in many organizations and continued until her failing health caused her to give up all outside activities.

She is survived by her husband Dr. J.G. Tretbar, her son Stanfield, who is in the Army Air Force, her mother Mrs C.P. Downing , of Wichita, her sisters Miss Jacquetta Downing, head of the French Department in Wichita University and Mrs Myrtis Weir of Baton Rouge Louisiana. Funeral Services will be held Friday morning at 10;30 am at the Peacock - Soice Chapel, conducted by Dr R.L. George of Hutchinson, assisted by Reverend H.P. Woertendyke.


A woman of many unusual talents and consecration is gone from our midst, but the intense suffering of her protracted illness reconciles all to her release and victory. Burial, Stafford Cemetery
