Richard Vann Farthing, 83, of Vilas, died Wednesday, October 31, 2001 in Boone.

He was born February 19, 1918, in the Bethel community to James B. and Gladys Farthing.

A fourth generation descendent of the first Farthings to settle in the Bethel community. Mr. Farthing grew up and lived in Bethel most of his life.

During World War II, he worked as a welder in the shipyards at Wilmington, North Carolina and served in the U.S. Merchant Marines. From 1946-1955 he was the proprietor of a general store at Bethel. He worked as a tradesman welder and farmer until retirement.

Survivors include his second wife, Maude Farthing, two sons, three daughters, four sisters, ten grandchildren and a great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lena Ward Farthing and one brother, Dick Farthing.

Services were conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Bethel Baptist Church. The body will lie in state from 1-2 p.m. Officiating will by Reverend Paul R. Lloyd. Burial will follow in the C. S. Farthing Cemetery.

Austin & Barnes Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangement.
