Principal founder of the Gallery of Fine Arts at Albany and was elected its first President. He served a term as Alderman in Albany, but never took an active interest in politics. Prior to his departure from Albany he served as Brigade Inspector with the rank of Colonel on the staff of General Stephen VanRensselaer. When he arrived in New York he devoted his time writing articles for the principal art periodicals, contributing also to the Evening Post. He was a member of the New York Historical Society and was also the revisor of James E. Freeman's work "Leaves from an Artist's Portfolio". He left several sons including the Rev. Henry Y. Satterlee and Dr. Clarence Satterlee, both of New York City.
