Harland Charles was born on December 31, 1918 in Jamestown Township, Blue Earth County to Frank and Anna (Pieper-Hoehn) Frederick. He attended All Saints Parochial School in Madison Lake. Harland entered military service in the United States Army in January of 1942. During WWII, he spent 18 months in Alaska as an Army engineer working on the ALCAN Highway. He was also stationed in the South Pacific until his honorable discharge in December of 1945. He returned home, and on May 21 1947 was united in marriage to Charlotte Henrietta Dauk at All Saints Catholic Church in Madison Lake. They have farmed and raised their family n Jamestown Township. In addition to farming, Harland harvested Reed Canary Seed in southern Minnesota, northern Iowa, and Wisconsin. He was a member of the Madison Lake American Legion Post and the Catholic Order of Foresters. Harland had many interests, including; fishing, deer hunting, his Harley Davidsons, restoring antique engines and cars, woodcarving, snowmobiling, making go carts for his kids, and flying his won airplane. He especially enjoyed time spent with his family.
