Robert's first wife was Celestia "Lessie" Covington (1852 - 1889) - they were married in Union County, N. C. on Feb. 12, 1868 (per Frances Small's "Union County North Carolina Marriages, 1843-1899").
His 2nd wife was from South Carolina, Nannie Isabelle Stroud.
R.V. was a Civil War soldier in the Confederate Armies (10th N. C. Heavy Artillery, Co. C). He was "present & accounted for through October 1864" per "North Carolina Troops: 1861-1865", Vol. 1, page 537. In later years he was active with the Confederate Veterans local camp, "Camp Walkup", even serving as its Commander for some years. Per his obituary January 20, 1914 in The Monroe Journal, "He was always ready to go down in his pocket for funds to help needy old soldiers or to send them to re-unions. He was buried in a uniform of Confederate gray." His notice also shares that he served as Mayor of Monroe at one time and also as a representative in the state government.
Children by Celestia were sons Hugh M. Houston, D. A. and C. E. Houston and daughters Mrs. J. J. Lindsey and Mrs. Allen Heath. Children by Nannie, his 2nd wife, were Mrs. Dr. R. L. Payne, Mr. Robert Houston, and Miss Octavia Houston. His sister, Mrs. Ellen Houston (Armfield) Fitzgerald, survived him at the time of his death.
