Gustav Adam Kleinkauf, born in Bucks County PA was the fourth child of Adam Kleinkauf and Maria Degel's eleven children. Gus was a younger brother of Jonas Kleinkauf.

After Gus was born, Adam and Maria heard about some land available for homesteading in Minnesota, so they moved to Rochester, MN. They found the climate too harsh and not conducive to Adam's dream of a vineyard. In 1874, they moved to the Philadelphia area.

In 1880, the family of eight children moved again to Grand Island, NE, where they bought 32 0 acres. Maria was adamant about the children receiving an education, so Adam and Maria built a house on Clark St. Apparently, Maria's insistence on education paid off as Gus and two of his brothers, Henry and Sam became pharmacists. His brothers William, Elmer and Frank all entered business fields.

Gus was a prescription clerk in 1891 in H.D. Boyden Pharmacy in Grand Island and resided at 714 S. Clark in Grand Island. He became a pharmacist and worked for the American Pharmaceutical Company in Joplin, MO.

On June 17, 1896 when Gus was 26 years old he married Alice Collier and in 1897, had one daughter, Katherine who married a Colson.

Sometime later Gus and his family lived in Mineral Wells, TX where he was the manager of a drugstore.

In 1919, Gus joined his brother Sam in the Kleinkauf Drugstore in Los Angeles, CA. The drugstore was destroyed during a major earthquake in 1930.
