George M. Hess, 93, formerly of 10 Rutherford Road, Lower Paxton Twp., was a resident of the Lebanon Valley Brethren Home, Palmyra. He died Monday, June 20, 2011 in Hershey Medical Center.

He was retired from the Naval Air Systems Command Headquarters, Washington, D.C., as an Industrial Procurement Specialist and previously worked at the former Olmsted Air Force Base in Middletown. He was a graduate of John Harris High School and attended Temple University.

George was a member of the Harrisburg Hunters and Anglers Association, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the American Association of Retired Persons and was a charter member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Penbrook, and a member of the Church of the Holy Spirit, Palmyra. His military service in WWII was with the Army Air Corps, 77th Troop Carrier Squadron in the European Theatre of Operation, having been active in the Battle of the Bulge and participation in the engagement to capture the crucial bridge at Arnhem for which he received the Air Medal.

He is the widower of Marguerite C. Hess and is survived by two sons, Gregory G. Hess and wife Donita, of Palmyra, William N. Hess and wife Bobbi, of Alexandria, LA; one grandson, Derek Hess; four granddaughters, Nicole Diestler, Amy Hess, Molly Hess and Lisa Heister; three great grandchildren, Aidan and Sydney Heister, and Semaje Diestler; and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the Church of the Holy Spirit, 245 West Pine Street, Palmyra. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Holy Spirit, New Church Building Fund, 245 West Pine Street, Palmyra, PA 17078.
