Rufus was the 5th of 8 children born to John D. Spradlin and Lucy Ann Stone. Just after Rufus turned nine, they left Virginia by covered wagon to Texas, and he walked most of the way barefooted. He was married twice, and he had 7 natural children from his first wife Sarah Brasher, and 6 natural children from his second wife Iva Huie, plus 6 step children from her as well. They sadly, the oldest sons were disrespectful to him. He loved all his children nevertheless...he used to go and watch his son Roy play baseball, when he was in the semi pros, Rufus tried to catch as many as he could it was said. He was always out looking for work to support his family, even going to Oklahoma, and other towns in Texas, just to provide during the depression, and he'd do mostly labor work, like working in the fields, or loading cotton.

His daughter Eva said, he was a quiet man, and when he didn't want to hear the fussin' and fightin', he'd sit under a tree, whittle a stick, and drink a tall cold one. Sounds like Grandpa had the right idea to me. Rufus died sadly from prostate cancer at the age of 77.
