Born March 4, 1929, in Caldwell County, he was a son of the late Fred and Donnie Magdlane Mathais Estes.
A member of First United Methodist Church, he served four years of duty in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1948 on the Battleship USS New Jersey and the USS Little Rock. He was a member of American Legion Post 48, Hickory, and Hickory Masonic Lodge 343 for 51 years. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, Scottish Rite and a Shriner.
He was a depot agent for Carolina Northwestern Railway, Dallas, N.C., and was promoted to storekeeper for eight years during the 1950s. He then went into the business of supply for the furniture industry with Tooling and Abrasives and also machinery for the rest of his years until retirement.
Mr. Estes was a charter member of The Church of The Master, United Church of Christ, and played a key role in its foundation of being a chairman of the building committee. Later he joined the First United Methodist Church of Hickory for the last six years of his life.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Glenn Dale Estes. Survivors include his wife, Rebecca (Becky) Fisher Estes of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Vickie Lynn Estes Franklin and Vernon Franklin of Granite Falls and Elizabeth Ann Estes of Charlottesville, Va.; a son, Stephen C. Estes Jr. of Hickory; a brother, Ronald Joe Estes of Granite Falls; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Doris Estes Harrold and the Rev. Hobart Dean Harrold, Frances Estes Curtis and Charles Curtis, and Annie Rose Estes Beal of Granite Falls; a grandson, Michael Painter of Charlottesville, Va.; two grand-daughters, Stephanie Vernon of Granite Falls and Erin Painter of Hickory; and a great-granddaughter, Katelyn N. Sain of Hickory.
A memorial service will be conducted by the Revs. George Freeman and Dean Harrold at 2 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Hickory.
Military rites will be conducted by American Post 48.
