Mary A., daughter of Jacob and Catherine Kennedy Horton was born in Larentum, Alleghany County, Penn., January 22nd, 1825 and died, the last of her family, at her daughter's home in Hamlin, May 4th, 1913, aged 88 years, 3 months and 12 days. She was united in marriage to George W. Clark, October 18th, 1847. To this union nine children were born, four of whom died when young.
In October 1865 the family removed to Rock Island County, Ill. In 1889 they came to Audubon county living on their farm in Greeley township, then in Exira and later in Hamlin where the husband and father died ten years ago. She had been with her youngest daughter in Rock Island since last July and very much desired to return to her old home which she did April 1st. Though feeble she seemed much better for a few days, but the infirmities of old age and a weak heart caused her to take her bed and after many days suffering, she passed on to the better world. She had united with the Methodist church in girlhood and was a member of that church at Old Hamlin. In talking with her children and grandchildren shortly before her death she expressed satisfaction that her long journey was so nearly ended and that "Though I walk through the valley and shadow death I will fear no evil for Thou art with me."
She leaves to mourn the loss of a kind and loving mother, five children, Jeanett Garnett, of Hamlin; James T. Clark, of Eunice, Missouri; Ada Gennung, of Staples, Minnesota; W.L. Clark, of Hamlin, and Grace Crompton, of Rock Island, Illinois. Also fifteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. The funeral services were held Tuesday at ten o'clock in the Methodist church at Old Hamlin and conducted by Rev. Lawton of Exira. The solemn procession then wended its way to Maple Grove cemetery at Audubon where the remains were laid to rest.
