STATESVILLE - Dr. Edward Burt McKenzie, 83 years old, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, skilled surgeon and gifted artist, died Wednesday, May 14, 2008, after a long and valiant battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Dr. McKenzie was born in Salisbury on June 10, 1924, to the late Benjamin Whitehead McKenzie and Katharine Burt McKenzie. His brother, Benjamin Whitehead McKenzie, and his sister, Virginia McKenzie (Coco) Murphy, predeceased him.

On June 19, 1948, he married the person who was described by others as the smartest person in his medical school class, Nancy Belle Guy of Newland. Their marriage produced five children, 11 grandchildren and one great-grand child, all who survive. He died just short of his 60th wedding anniversary.

Throughout his life, Edward McKenzie was a man of passion, with many varied interests and hobbies, who personified his belief that any job worth doing is worth doing well.

Edward Burt McKenzie was educated in the Salisbury public schools before attending the Citadel, in Charleston, S.C.

On Dec. 7, 1942, Ed enlisted in the army and left college to serve his country fighting in World War II. He attended Officer Candidate School and was sent to the European theater of war as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army. Serving as point guard for General Patton's army in the march to the Rhine River, Ltd. McKenzie was shot in the arm. He returned to the United States for rehabilitation, was awarded the Purple Heart and honorably discharged from the army.

After the war, Edward McKenzie completed his undergraduate degree and two years of medical school at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He then received his medical degree from the University of Rochester, Rochester, N.Y., and did his general surgery training at Barnes Hospital in Saint Louis, Mo. After residency he returned to Salisbury, where he joined his father in the practice of general surgery. Dr. McKenzie practiced surgery there until retirement in 1989.

During his years in Salisbury, Dr. McKenzie was active in his church, St. Luke's Episcopal, where he served as Senior Warden of the Vestry and as a Sunday school teacher. He was always active in community affairs, being instrumental in establishing the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Awards Ceremony and Hall of Fame in Salisbury in 1960. That same year he was named the Junior Man of the Year in Salisbury and later received the Lions Club Man of the Year in Salisbury. Once again heeding the call of his country, he served as a medical volunteer with the American Red Cross in Kuwait after the First Gulf War.

For most of his adult life Dr. McKenzie followed a passion for art. His interpretations of the people and places he experienced were done in pen and ink, watercolor and acrylic. He was a member of the National Acrylic Artists Association. His work won praise from many, awards from several contests and admiration from all who enjoyed and still enjoy his artwork.

Dr. McKenzie is survived by his beloved wife Nancy Guy McKenzie; his children and their spouses, Mary Bruce McKenzie Serene and James William Serene, Edward Burt McKenzie, Jr. and Nancy Dobbin McKenzie, Elizabeth McKenzie Peterkin and William George Peterkin, III, Jane McKenzie Cartner and James Patton Cartner, Nancy McKenzie Warlick and William Clark Warlick, Jr. His surviving grandchildren are Louisa Serene Schneider, Thomas Grattan Schneider, Jane Avery Serene and Bryan Michael Limmer, William Guy Serene, Edward Burt McKenzie, III and Rebecca Raybon, Laura Brandon McKenzie, Robert Sinclair McKenzie, James Patton Cartner, Jr., Mary Bruce Cartner, Benjamin Corbin Cartner, William Clark Warlick, III, and Nancy Elizabeth Warlick.
