Born in May, 1846* in Prussia to Johann Roos of Igel, and his wife Elizabetha Maria Meier, John was raised in the predominantly German farming community of New Berlin, Wisconsin where his family had settled after immigrating.
It was there that he met his future bride, Adeline Bornheimer.
That he served in the Civil War is known because his death certificate lists the nearby Old Soldier's Home as his last known address. However, due to surname spelling variations of the day, his true service record has not yet been located.
After the end of the war, he returned to Milwaukee where he settled and married Adeline in 1869. Their eldest surviving children also married and started their lives in Milwaukee, then moved to Grafton where they all lived near to one another for a time until their son, Harry, moved to Chicago.
John was a cigar maker by trade--then a very busy and popular industry, and he worked at it until very late in life.
Adeline preceded him in death, passing in 1919, and the 1920 census shows John living with his daughter, Lena, and her family in Grafton. His death record shows he spent his final years residing at the Old Soldier's Home just outside of Milwaukee.
John is buried along with his wife and many of their children here in Calvary Cemetery.
