From a 1901 Nance County, Nebraska, newspaper clipping file, publication date unknown, transcribed by Linda Berney:
Joseph Baldridge, father of the Baldridge boys of this place, passed away at his home in Jefferson County, Ill., after a short illness, aged 81 years.
As his last and dearest wish was to see all of his children again, Joe, Harve and Dick Baldridge of this place were immediately summoned to his bedside, who hurriedly took the next train for Centralia, Ill., arriving there on the 15th ult.
Upon their arrival he immediately recognized them and seemed satisfied after having talked with each of them for a short time; but as this seemed to be all that he lingered for, he began to sink very rapidly, and at 8 p.m. May 16th he quietly passed away, retaining his consciousness until the last.
Thousands of his friends, relatives and neighbors were present to see him laid away in his last resting place by his six sons, who by request, were his pall bearers.
He leaves a widow 81 years of age, 9 children (6 sons and 3 daughters) 46 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren surviving him.
Mr. Joseph Baldridge was born in 1820, coming to Jefferson County, Ill., in 1842, where he purchased a farm near Centralia, Ill., and had made it his home up to the time of his death. He accumulated considerable property during the nearly 60 years he made this country his home. He was known and respected by all throughout the southern part of the State. The whole of Jefferson County mourn his loss.
