Clarence E. Hufford, 93, of Lititz, passed away on Sunday, July 3, 2011 at Luther Acres.

Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Jacob B. and Estelle (Witwer) Hufford and was the husband of Verna V. (Harnish) Hufford. Verna and Clarence had been married 73 years.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Akron where he had served on the building committee, the church council and was a Sunday school teacher. Clarence was the first Akron board member of the Ephrata Union School District and served on the school board for 16 years. An Akron Lion since 1948, he was awarded the Melvin Jones award. Clarence was a Boy Scouts committee charter member in Akron and he also volunteered with Meals on Wheels. An Akron volunteer fireman, he was also the Boro janitor at the Akron Fire Hall.

A member of the Garden Spot Camping Club, he enjoyed RVing and photography. Clarence retired as plant superintendent at Miller Hess Shoe Company in 1983 after 46 years of employment. He was a kind and soft spoken man.

In addition to his wife, Clarence is survived by two daughters: Dawn H. White of Wallingford, VT; and Janet E., wife of Barry C. Burkholder of Wilmington, NC; 7 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and a brother, J. Bruce Hufford of Columbus, MS.

He was preceded in death by two sisters: Loretta Wikerd and Pauline Stoltzfus.

A memorial service will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at the Zion Lutheran Church, 435 Main Street, Akron, with Rev. Matthew J. Lenahan officiating. The family will receive friends following the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Clarence's memory may be made to Zion Lutheran Church, 435 Main Street Akron, PA 17501.
