Charles was born December 6, 1834, in Bridgeton, Cumberland County, Maine He died May 1, 1912, at Trego, Washburn County, Wisconsin, aged 77 years, 4 months and 25 days, and was buried May 1, 1912, in Wayside Cemetery, Barron, Wisconsin, in Lot 101, BL. 2. There is a Jenks headstone, but no foot stone for either Charles or his second wife Fedelia Jenks. A G.A R. flag holder with the embossed name of Charles Jenks is by the Jenks headstone.

In 1995 the author discovered that Charles did not have a gravestone. The County Veterans Service Officer was notified and ordered a gravestone from the Veterans Administration which was erected in 1996 at County expense. That military style gravestone is inscribed "Charles Jenks Pvt Co. D 6 Minn Inf Dec 6 1834 – May 1, 1912."

Charles was a charter member of Martin Watson Post 173 of the G.A.R.

Charles was married twice, with his first marriage October 5, 1863, at Wabasha, Wabasha County, Minnesota, to Martha Retenier. He left her and moved to Wisconsin. His later attempt to obtain a divorce in Baraboo, Wisconsin, resulted in a separation and alimony. Their only known child was:

On October 8, 1881, Charles was united in marriage to Fedelia Wilson, in a Civil ceremony at Prairie du Sac, Sauk County, Wisconsin. Fedelia was born in February 1863, in Wisconsin, daughter of a father born in Ohio and a mother born in New York.

Their seven children, all born in Wisconsin, were:

Charles was a Physician and Surgeon. On March 19, 1886, The Barron County Shield carried an advertisement that stated that Dr. Charles Jenks, Physician and Surgeon had recently opened and office in Barron and was prepared to attend all professional calls in the vicinity. Later he moved his practice to Springbrook and still later to Trego, Washburn County, Wisconsin.

Charles was a Civil War veteran who was drafted May 26, 1864, while living in Wabasha County, Minnesota, to serve one year as a Private in the 6th Minnesota Infantry. On June 14, 1864, he was mustered into Federal service with Company D at Fort Snelling, St. Paul, Minnesota. At that time he received $25.00 of his $100.00 enlistment bounty, and was listed as a 27 year old, 5'10" tall farmer, with brown hair, gray eyes and a florid complexion, born in Maine.

During his service, Charles became sick, was hospitalized and subsequently transferred to Company K of the 2nd Minnesota Infantry Regiment. Later it was determined that he was fit only for limited duty and on September 1, 1864, he was transferred to the 17th Veteran Reserve Corp, stationed in Indianapolis, Indiana. On June 19, 1865, he was mustered out of the Veteran Reserve Corps at Indianapolis, Indiana. On the muster out roll it was noted that the was due the last $25.00 of his $100.00 enlistment bounty.

On July 28, 1890, Charles filed Application No. 823,770, for an Invalid Pension, which was approved under Certificate No. 777,718. On August 31, 1923, Fidelia Jenks filed Application No. 1,209,406, for a Widow's Pension. Her application was rejected after lengthy correspondence on the basis that she was unable to provide the required documentation that Charles had received a divorce from his first wife, or alternately prove that his first wife had died prior to 1905.

In the 1890 U.S. Census, Special Schedule, Charles Jenks was listed as living in the City of Barron, Barron County, Wisconsin, and as having served as a Private in Company B of the 6th Minnesota Infantry, from May 27, 1864 to July 19, 1865, for total service of 1 year, 1 month and 22 days.

In the 1900 U.S. Census, Charles Jenks was listed as a 65 year old physician, living in Barron, Barron County, Wisconsin, with his 37 year old wife Delia and their five children: Pell, age 14; Fred, age 12; Jennie, age 11; Gertrude, age 8; and 2 year old Flossie M. Jenks. They had been married 17 years, owned their house free and clear, and were the parents of seven children of whom two were deceased.

In the 1910 U.S. Census, Charles Jenks was a 75 year old farmer living in Springbrook Township, Washburn County, Wisconsin, with his 46 year old wife Fedelia and their 12 year old daughter Flossie M. Jenks. They had been married 26 years, owned their farm free and clear and were the parents of seven children of whom two were deceased. Their children Charles P., Fred T. and Gertrude H. Jenks were also listed as living on Oak Street in nearby Spooner, Wisconsin, where Charles P. was a 24 year old bank cashier and listed as head of the family, and 21 year old Fred T. 18 year old Gertrude H. Jenks, were store clerks. They were all single and lived in a rented house.

Obituary

The remains of Dr. Chas. Jenks were brought to this city last Thursday evening from his home at Trego, where he died on Wednesday morning. Funeral services were held from the M.E. church on Friday forenoon, being conducted by the Masonic order, and interment was in the Barron cemetery. The deceased was for many years a prominent physician of Barron. He was in his seventy-eight year. He is survived by a wife and five children, who were all present at the funeral.
