Funeral services for R.L. (Lavern) Alford, 66, were held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 21, from the Ott & Lee Chapel with Dr. Lovett Weems officiating. Interment followed in the Homewood Methodist Cemetery.

Alford passed away on Wednesday [May 19] at the Lackey Hospital following an extended illness. A lifetime resident of Route 1, Forest, he was a retired farmer and merchant, having been owner and operator of Alford Grocery at Homewood for over 20 years. He was a member of the Homewood Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Martha Pryor Alford, Route 2, Forest; three sons, Bobby Alford, Monticello, Kenneth L. Alford, Pisgah-Forrest, North Carolina, and James A. Alford, Chattanooga, Tenn.; three daughters, Mrs. Bettye Risher, Morton, Mrs. Gwen Lindsey, Jackson, and Mrs. Janice Burt, Marrero, La.; one brother, Edwin Alford, Dallas; three sisters, Mrs. Virgie Wall, Tulsa, Okla., Mrs. Audrey Gibson, Dallas, and Mrs. Christine Hegwood, Biloxi; 14 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Tommy Barnes, Ray Barnes, Jimmy Pryor, Baker Alford, Billy R. Alford, and Ricky Hegwood.
