Oliver Huffman was born six miles southwest of Versailles on September 21, 1892. His parents were Thomas and Mary Jane Miller Huffman. There were only five living children in the family, he was the youngest. His grandparents were Andrew and Mary Ann Moore Huffman and Jonathan and Sarah Miller.
At the age of 25 he married Elizabeth Katherine (Kate) Friedley, oldest daughter of Fred and Donna Napier Friedley. Soon after his marriage he was inducted into the United States Army. He served with the Army in France during World War I.
Oliver was the father of nine children, all boys. The first son was born in 1919 and the last in 1935.
Mr. Huffman was a farmer most of his life.
The Huffman children went to the rural schools of Morgan County. The older children started school at Smiley school west of Versailles. In 1927 they moved to a farm near Excelsior. The children attended Providence School. The family returned to Smiley School area in 1944 where the younger children finished school.
Kate Huffman died of cancer in 1939 when the oldest son was twenty and the youngest 4-1/2. She was the first person to be buried in the Oak Park section of the Versailles Cemetary.
After World War II the five oldest boys were all married within a period of a year and two days.
Cecil married Dorothy Arnold of Boonville in 1946. They had a daughter, Kathy. Cecil lives in Columbia, Missouri. His life work has been in the pest control business there.
Norman married Doris Metzger of Lawrence, Kansas in 1946. They had Patty from Doris's previous marriage born in 1942 and twin girls, Carol and Cheryl, born in 1948. Both still live in Sedalia. Norman was in the pest control business. Norman died in 1977.
